The First Years

The Great First Years' Duck Hunt Epic 11-year voyage to end in Britain?
24 July 2003

Great Britain’s shores are due to be hit imminently by a wave of exceptional little plastic ducks, following an epic eleven-year voyage half way round the world across hostile seas and oceans.

The intrepid ducks, who normally confine their adventures to splashing about in babies’ bath tubs, were washed overboard in the Pacific Ocean eleven years ago en route from Hong Kong to Tacoma, Washington during a heavy storm.  Since then, they have showed their mettle, travelling valiantly through shark-infested waters, surviving hurricanes and typhoons, basking in the sunshine of Hawaii, shivering through the Bering Straits between Alaska and Siberia, bobbing stoically through the Arctic and the ice floes of the North Pole, sailing past Greenland and down through the chilly waters of the North Atlantic.  Still smiling, they are now paddling merrily towards the relatively tamer shores of Great Britain.

Clive Wooster, The First Years Vice President for Europe, said: “These amazing little ducks are becoming much sought after.  In parts of the world, they have actually become cult collector’s items.  We hope people will have fun looking for them and look forward to tracking where they finally come to shore.  The first 250 finders will receive an official certificate verifying the authenticity of their duck’s awe-inspiring odyssey.”

Despite their enviable durability, eleven years of adventuring on the high seas have nevertheless faded the ducks’ original bright yellow to a much paler white.  To receive a signed limited edition certificate, anyone discovering one of these ducks along the coastline this summer (a true find must have ‘The First Years’ printed into his little chest to prove he is an authentic veteran of the incredible journey) should send a photograph, together with date and location of the find to ‘The Great TFY Duck Hunt’ c/o JSPR, Unit 4A, Lowesden Business Park, Lambourn Woodlands, Hungerford, Berks.
